Can anyone suggest why Acronis is failing to auto-cleanup older versions to release space? Each full backup version is around GB, GB is you add the differentials. Update: Acronis reports my total backups size as being GB in the app. Yet when I check the folder size it’s around GB larger than that. The folder contains a single continuous chain of backups all in sequence.
Has Acronis lost track of things? One thing to mention, I’ve instructed Acronis not to delete my first version. I can’t see why but could it be that it removes this from the total backup size calculation?
Paul, automatic cleanup only works on completed version chains and then runs when a new version chain has been successfully started with a new full backup image, so you need to allow extra space for this. Note: Please do not expect any instant reply for private messages as I am often unable to access these due to forum timeout errors!
Ok but it had 3 complete version chains available in addition to the first one which it’s been told to keep. Why wouldn’t it just delete the oldest of the 3? That aside though, can you tell me why Acronis reports the total backups size to be GB less than it is in the actual backups folder? However that still doesn’t explain its failing to free up space.
Just now I kicked off a new backup and clicked ignore to the disk space warnings. It managed to complete with a little room to spare on my disk. So now Acronis reports my total backup size as GB, I have 5 complete chains numbered 1 to 5 and still it hasn’t deleted any. The limit is set to GB. Paul, I do not personally use the setting to limit the size of backups to a specific value though I suspect that retaining the first version of the backup may be in play here.
X completed chains plus 1 further full backup image before the oldest chain is deleted. I preferred not to use the number of chains method as it’s a little harder to predict storage usage.
If I had plenty of disk space I would happily go that way. I don’t know what’s gone wrong here, I guess I’ll have to restart the chains from scratch to reset things. I have two machines I setup on a different network that backup to a NAS using Acronis and they both handle this setting perfectly.
Thanks for your help Steve. The automatic cleanup stops working when one move the archive to another drive using proper option to do it. Sometimes it stop with no obvious reason. Same here. Nothing in the cleanup options has been saved. Create a new Backup Task, closed the app and when i newly oppened it – nothing has been saved! FYI after making changes to a task, the version chain is reset. For example, if you say to cleanup after 7 incrementals, it completes 5 and you chqnge the task, you’ve got 7 more to go now.
It also won’t cleanup until th next full has completed. And last, if you are using a cleanup day count, like 7 days Basically, best to start with a clean backup task and not edit it if you can avoid it and I’d recommend using of backups to retain instead of number of days. Why not??? You can try downloading the most current version, right click and “run as admin” even if logged in as admin, and try a repair install.
Then create a new task with a unique, never used name and try again. If that first do it, I’d remove the app, run the cleanup tool with right click and “run as administrator” reboot and reinstall clean, but you’ll be starting over completely new, which means making new tasks and running fresh backups.
The exact same thing happened. The Options settings for Automatic Cleanup did not save. I performed the backup as well.
Kreuzritter, can you post a screen shot of your Backup Scheme page settings for the task where you see this problem? The options that I use that work are shown below. In reply to okay. Deb: did they fix your issue? I’m having the same issue with cleanup set to a size restriction.
The settings reset when I switch between viewing backup jobs. Andrew, please ensure that you have the Backup Scheme set to be Custom scheme in order for it to retain your cleanup settings correctly. I ended up saving it custom “2TB cleanup” and this worked. I think where people are getting confused is they think each backup job has its own custom scheme as the interface would lead one to believe and it’s what I’m accustomed to being an old Ghost user.
This isn’t the case. Perhaps it should be revisited by developers. Automatic cleanup rules To delete obsolete backup versions automatically, you can set one of the following cleanup rules:. The first backup version option Often the first version of any backup is one of the most valuable versions. This is true because it stores the initial data state for example, your system partition with recently installed Windows or some other stable data state for example, data after a successful virus check.
Do not delete the first version of the backup – Select this check box to keep the initial data state. The program will create two initial full backup versions. The first version will be excluded from the automatic cleanup, and will be stored until you delete it manually. If you select incremental or differential method, the first backup chain will start from the second full backup version. And only the third version of the backup will be incremental or differential one.
After two years it decided to change all the settings of the jobs back to default :.
