In , the Marine Corps and Air Force agreed to jointly develop the Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter, also known as Advanced Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing ASTOVL. CALF project was chosen after Paul Bevilaqua persuaded [6] the Air Force that his team’s concept [7] if stripped of its lift system had potential as a complement to the F Raptor. The Joint Advanced Strike Technology JAST program was created in , implementing one of the recommendations of a United States Department of Defense DoD “Bottom-Up Review to include the United States Navy in the Common Strike Fighter program.
The JAST program office was established on 27 January to develop aircraft , weapons , and sensor technology with the aim of replacing several disparate US and UK aircraft with a single family of aircraft; the majority of those produced would replace Fs. Merrill McPeak , former Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force, has complained that Defense Secretary Les Aspin ‘s decision to force all three services to use a single airframe greatly increased the costs and difficulty of the project.
This investment allowed Canada to participate in the extensive and rigorous competitive process where Boeing and Lockheed Martin developed and competed their prototype aircraft. Japan plans to eventually acquire a total of Fs, which will include 42 FBs.
On 6 November Norway declared initial operational capability IOC for its fleet of 15 FAs out of a planned 52 FAs. On 27 December the Netherlands declared initial operational capability IOC for its fleet of 24 FAs that it has received to date from its order for 46 FAs. The F was designed with three initial variants — the FA, a CTOL land-based version; the FB, a STOVL version capable of use either on land or on aircraft carriers; and the FC, a CATOBAR carrier-based version.
Since then, there has been work on the design of nationally specific versions for Israel and Canada, as well as initial concept design work for an updated version of the FA, which would become the FD. The FA is the conventional takeoff and landing CTOL variant intended for the USAF and other air forces. It is the smallest, lightest version and capable of 9 g , the highest of all variants.

Compared to the FA, the FC features larger wings with foldable wingtip sections , larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control, stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier arrested landings, a twin-wheel nose gear, and a stronger tailhook for use with carrier arrestor cables. The FC is limited to 7. The US initially refused to allow such changes before permitting Israel to integrate its own electronic warfare systems, including sensors and countermeasures.
The main computer has a plug-and-play function for add-on systems; proposals include an external jamming pod, and new Israeli air-to-air missiles and guided bombs in the internal weapon bays. On 9 April , a JASDF FA attached to Misawa Air Base disappeared from radar about 84 miles km east of the Aomori Prefecture during a training mission over the Pacific Ocean.
The pilot, Major Akinori Hosomi, had radioed his intention to abort the drill before disappearing. On 19 May , a USAF FA from the 58th Fighter Squadron crashed while landing at Eglin AFB. The pilot ejected and was in stable condition. On 29 September , a USMC FB crashed in Imperial County , California, after colliding with a Marine Corps KC during air-to-air refuelling. The FB pilot was injured in the ejection, and the KC crash-landed gear up in a field.
