Louisville cruises to a win over Virginia. On 3rd and 6, Armstrong finds Sackett Wood over the middle for 27 yards and a first down. On the next play, Armstrong throws down the left sideline to Demick Starling, who makes a great catch for 22 yards. Armstrong is sacked to put UVA in 3rd and 14 and a screen pass to Demick Starling gets the Cavaliers close for a 4th and 1. Mike Hollins is initially denied, but then muscles his way for the first down.
The refs review the play and determine that Hollins was short of the line to gain and Virginia turns the ball over on downs. The Cardinals are starting to run the ball with impunity. Two runs move the chains and then Domann finds Huggins-Bruce for a yard play to move the ball to the UVA 7-yard line. Virginia is offsides and then Jawhar Jordan punches it in from 1-yard out for the touchdown.
The Cardinals take a commanding lead with just 11 minutes to play. UVA executes some positive plays in the final seconds of the third quarter as Armstrong completes a couple of passes to Keytaon Thompson for 9 and 11 yards each.
Armstrong connects with Thompson again for 15 yards, but that play is wiped away by an illegal blindside block on Xavier Brown. Dontayvion Wicks and Quincy Riley collide in mid-air and both are hurt on the play. Riley gets up and walks off on his own after a minute. Wicks eventually does the same a few minutes later and walks very slowly off the field accompanied by the UVA training staff.
An 8-yard completion to Keytaon Thompson sets up a manageable 3rd and 2, but UVA is unable to convert as Xavier Brown is brought down short of the first. Virginia goes for it on 4th down but Armstrong is sacked on the play and UVA turns it over on downs. UVA fans are beginning to head for the exits. Trevion Cooley runs for 13 yards and a first down. Domann connects with Hudson for 23 yards to the UVA yard line.
Cooley bounces a carry out the left side and gains 8 yards. A holding penalty on Louisville moves the ball back to the yard line, where Louisville has 1st and goal. Sanker eventually gets off the field on his own but is putting no pressure on his right foot. Domann tries to find Hudson in the end zone and Anthony Johnson is flagged for pass interference as he held Hudson to prevent the touchdown.
Trevion Cooley punches it in with a one-yard touchdown to put Louisville back up by 10 late in the third quarter. Louisville’s Marvin Dallas is ejected for targeting for his hit on Ethan Davies on the punt return. On the first play of the drive, Armstrong tries a deep ball down the left sideline to Wicks, but his pass is a little long and is intercepted by MJ Griffin.
Armstrong’s second pick of the day. The UVA defense comes up with an important stop to force a Louisville three-and-out for the first time since the first quarter. Anthony Johnson breaks up Domann’s third-down pass intended for Jaelin Carter. Armstrong throws to Keytaon Thompson on two-straight plays to start the drive. On 3rd and 10, Louisville brings pressure and Armstrong is forced to throw short to Perris Jones, who breaks a couple of tackles but is still well short of the first. UVA goes for it on 4th and 5 and Armstrong delivers a great ball to Dontayvion Wicks, who makes an equally impressive leaping catch on the right sideline to keep the drive alive.

A holding penalty gets the Cards behind the chains and James Jackson makes a nice tackle to set up 3rd and Domann again looks to Hudson on 3rd down and they connect for 18 yards and a first down. James Jackson is unable to cover Marshon Ford out of the backfield and Domann finds him wide open for a gain of 25 yards down inside the UVA 5-yard line.
The Virginia defense stops Louisville on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down and Scott Satterfield calls timeout with two seconds left in the half. James Turner kicks a yard field goal as time expires to give Louisville a halftime lead. As the UVA offense has cooled off, Brock Domann and the Louisville offense has started to heat up in the second quarter. Domann connects with Ford for 19 yards and a first down.
Huge play for the Virginia defense – Anthony Johnson breaks up Domann’s pass and Antonio Clary picks the ball out of the air for Virginia’s second interception of the game. UVA takes over at midfield. Armstrong finds Wicks for 7 yards and then Jones runs for 2 yards to set up third and 1. Armstrong keeps but is held for no gain.
UVA goes three-and-out for the third-consecutive drive. Domann scrambles on third down and is brought down two yards shy of the first. Louisville goes for it on 4th and Domann executes a brilliant fake handoff and takes it himself, bursting free and running untouched for a yard touchdown.
What a play from Brock Domann to stun the Cavalier defense. Tie game. The usually sure-handed Keytaon Thompson drops two passes, including one from Armstrong on 3rd and 12 that would have moved the chains. Virginia goes three-and-out. Domann completes his first pass of the game as he faces the pressure from Paul Akere and delivers a nice ball to Marshon Ford for 17 yards and a first down.
The refs review the play for targeting on Akere, but conclude that there was no targeting. Domann picks up five yards on a scramble and then misses Ford on a pass. On 3rd and 5, Louisville runs right up the middle with Jawhar Jordan, who finds a hole and runs for nine yards to move the chains. Domann connects with Hudson for six yards to set up 3rd and 3, which Louisville connects on another solid five-yard run from Jordan.
Louisville runs some misdirection and Domann targets Marshon Ford near the goal line but Ford is unable to make the catch as he is falling out of bounds. On the next play, Domann connects with Hudson and he runs for 17 yards and a first down to the UVA 7-yard line. Domann is flushed out of the pocket and his pass is too high and sails out of the back of the end zone. The Virginia ground game goes nowhere still as Perris Jones is brought down for no gain. Armstrong finds Wicks on a slant but Wicks drops the ball.
On 3rd and 10, Armstrong connects with Lavel Davis Jr. Virginia goes three-and-out and will punt it away to start the second quarter. UVA appeared to have forced another three-and-out, as Domann’s third down pass is incomplete, but Kam Butler is called for roughing the passer, giving Louisville its first first down of the game. Personal fouls continue to be an issue for the UVA defense. Two short runs for Louisville sets up 3rd and 3, but the Cards elect to throw the ball and Domann’s pass is too high for Tyler Hudson and well defended by Fentrell Cypress.
UVA forces the punt. After another rushing attempt goes nowhere for Perris Jones, Armstrong finds Keytaon Thompson for 15 yards and a first down. Armstrong goes right back to Thompson on the next play and he breaks a tackle and runs for another 16 yards. Ball security continues to be an issue for Armstrong. Especially after the interception on the the last drive, Louisville does not have confidence in Brock Domann to throw the ball down the field.
The Cards run it on first and second down for no gain each time. Louisville goes three-and-out again. UVA goes to Xavier Brown on the ground for a gain of seven and then Armstrong finds Keytaon Thompson for a short gain and a first down.
Virginia tries to get tricky as Perris Jones pitches the ball back to Armstrong on a flea flicker but the play fails miserably as Armstrong is sacked for a loss of five yards. Not sure UVA has the protection for extended plays like that. On 2nd and 15, Armstrong finds Sackett Wood over the middle and he runs for 16 yards and a first down. Perris Jones is tackled for a loss of one to set up third and Armstrong rolls out to his left and fires a beautiful deep ball down the field that finds Dontayvion Wicks in stride for a yard touchdown.
Finally, Armstrong and Wicks connect on the deep ball. Scoring Drive: 7 plays, 62 yards, Result: yard touchdown reception by Dontayvion Wicks. On the first play of the drive, Brock Domann tries a deep ball down the left sideline and Anthony Johnson plays the ball perfectly and makes an incredible one-handed interception.

After two games on the road, the Virginia Cavaliers are heading back home. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they’ll have plenty of motivation to get the ‘W. The night started off rough for the Cavaliers last week, and it ended that way, too.
They suffered a grim defeat to the Duke Blue Devils. No one had a standout game offensively for Virginia, but they got two touchdowns from QB Brennan Armstrong. U of L had victory within their grasp but couldn’t quite capture it as the team lost to BC. This was hardly the result the Cardinals or its fans were betting on, as they were favored by QB Malik Cunningham put forth a good effort for the losing side as he passed for one TD and yards on 28 attempts in addition to rushing for three TDs and 52 yards.
The losses bumped both teams down to an identical Two defensive numbers to keep in mind before kickoff: The Cavaliers rank 14th in the nation when it comes to sacks, with 15 on the season. But the Cardinals are even better: they enter the matchup with 16 sacks, good for 10th best in the nation.

Louisville added and yard field goals from James Turner during this time, as well as a yard rushing score on 4th down from Domann to take a lead into halftime. Louisville’s offensive momentum carried into the second half, as the Cardinals proceeded to score on three of the first four drives out of halftime, all of which were touchdowns. Ford hauled in a yard score through the air, whereas Cooley and Jawhar Jordan each had one-yard goal line scores. On their final drive of the afternoon, Louisville was able to bleed out of clock to hold onto the win.
Defensively, Louisville was just as dominant out of halftime. Virginia was able to string together just one scoring drive in the second half, one that was capped off by an yard rush by Armstrong, but got smothered every other time they took they field. On UVA’s other four second half drives, the Cardinals forced a punt, an interception and two turnovers on downs, holding the Cavaliers to just yards during the second half.
Next up, Louisville heads into their bye week. They’ll be back in action on Saturday, Oct. Yet, that lead would soon be washed away by a run from the Cardinals as a pair of turnovers from Brennan Armstrong and a number of drops from Dontayvion Wicks and Keytaon Thompson stunted the UVA offense while a yard touchdown run from Domann where the entirety of the Virginia defense was fooled by the draw quickly turned the game on its head.
It seemed like Virginia was back on track and was set to nab a much needed win at home. But, alas, here we are. What has happened to Brennan Armstrong this season has been really shocking considering what he did last year. His fumble and pair of interceptions against Louisville brought his season total for turnovers up to ten with six interceptions and four fumbles. Granted, Armstrong did still throw for yards on passing and added an yard rushing touchdown which gave his team some life in the third quarter.
His receivers dropped a number of perfect throws from him on big plays. Even though Jordan started, he and Trevion Cooley shared the majority of the rushing load with the two switching off on drives. Jordan finished with 11 carries, 29 yards and a score, and Cooley led the running backs with 18 touches, 77 yards and a TD.
The score came on the heels of Griffin picking off Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong. Griffin finished the game with five tackles four solo. He averaged Armstrong finished the day 24 of 34 for yards, a touchdown and two picks. But the U of L defense hounded him into six sacks by six different players. Brownlee said there were some changes made to the defense this week, in part attributed to Satterfield moving over to help more on the defensive side of the ball.
The Cardinals’ fourth-year head coach said Tuesday that, moving forward, he would spend more time with the unit.
